With the ancient Greeks, in Shakespeare and in your gran's kitchen: rosemary goes with a clear head and good food. doTERRA's Rosemary is pure, herby and so strong that one drop does the work of a whole sprig.
🌿 Rosmarinus officinalis · herby, clear, powerful
Rosemary is an evergreen shrub from the Mediterranean with a herby, camphor-like scent that wakes you right up. The name comes from the Latin ros marinus, dew of the sea, because the plant loves growing along the coast. The ancient Greeks, Romans, Egyptians and Hebrews held it sacred. Its scent comes mainly from three compounds: 1,8-cineole, alpha-pinene and camphor.
Traditionally, rosemary has always been about remembering. Greek students are said to have tucked a sprig behind their ears while they studied. In Shakespeare's Hamlet, Ophelia says: "There's rosemary, that's for remembrance." At European weddings and funerals, rosemary stood for faithfulness and for not forgetting for centuries. And Hungary Water, one of Europe's oldest perfumes, was built on rosemary.
Researchers wanted to know whether that old reputation holds up. In a study by Moss and colleagues (2003), people in a room scented with rosemary did better on memory tasks and felt more alert than people with no scent. Moss and Oliver (2012) found that people with more 1,8-cineole in their blood worked faster and more accurately. How scent helps your memory is all in my blog Your nose is a memory stick.
doTERRA's Rosemary comes from fields in Morocco and every batch is tested for purity. In Europe you use the oil as a food flavouring: one drop gives a stew, roasted vegetables or new potatoes the full flavour of fresh rosemary, without needles stuck in your teeth.
Pure essential oil is hugely concentrated: one drop of Rosemary equals a generous handful of fresh rosemary needles. So: use diluted, and at most one drop a day.
