The story of Jasmine

Jasmine is known as the queen of the night. Its scent is sweet, warm and alluring, and the blossoms are picked in the dark, long before sunrise, so the heat can't spoil their fragrance.

For a date night, I pair Jasmine with Neroli. The freshness of neroli lightens the sweet warmth of jasmine, and together they smell like a perfume nobody else has.

The name comes from the Persian yasmin, ‘gift from God’. In ancient Egypt, women used jasmine in scented baths and rituals more than 3,000 years ago. In India the flower is woven into temples, prayer and celebration: women braid jasmine into their hair, and jasmine garlands belong to births and weddings. Spanish sailors brought it to the south of France, where around 1700 jasmine helped make Grasse the perfume capital of the world. Legend even has it that Cleopatra had the sails of her ship soaked in jasmine oil before she met Mark Antony.

The blossoms are too delicate to distil, so their scent is gently extracted as an absolute. 5 ml takes around 21,000 freshly picked blossoms. There are more than 200 kinds of jasmine; this roller contains royal jasmine, Jasminum grandiflorum, the one perfumers prize most.

The royal jasmine for this roller comes from Egypt. The blossoms are picked by hand at night, usually around half past two, and processed the same day.
