doTERRA Neroli Touch

The story of Neroli

For me, Neroli is a top oil for every woman over 40. Almost everyone knows the fresh scent, even if they've never heard the name: think of 4711, the classic eau de cologne. Everybody likes that scent. For women going through the menopause there's more to it, because it's been studied.

Korean researchers asked 63 postmenopausal women to breathe in neroli oil for five minutes twice a day for five days. A comparison group smelled almond oil. Compared with that group, the women who inhaled neroli scored better on the physical symptoms of the menopause and reported more sexual desire. Their blood pressure was lower, and their cortisol and oestrogen levels moved in a favourable direction. A small study, with a clear result (Choi et al., 2014).

That's exactly my experience. I use Neroli almost every day, together with Clary Calm. And together they smell like a beautiful perfume, too.

Neroli comes from the blossom of the bitter orange tree. The same tree gives three oils: neroli from the blossom, petitgrain from the leaf and bitter orange from the peel. One 15 ml bottle of pure neroli takes more than 18 kilos of freshly picked blossom. Legend has it the name comes from an Italian princess of Nerola, who perfumed her gloves and her bath with it in the 17th century. And across Europe, brides wove orange blossom into their hair for centuries.

On your skin, neroli is gentle and nourishing, and a much-loved oil in natural skincare. Because it comes from the blossom and not the peel, you don't need to stay out of the sun after putting it on.

From the study

Five minutes of smelling, twice a day, for five days: in that short time the researchers already saw a difference in postmenopausal women.

Why this one

Studied in women

One of the few oils with a study in postmenopausal women.

Precious and pure

More than 18 kilos of blossom for 15 ml, CPTG-tested for purity.

No sun warning

From the blossom, not the peel. Fine to wear during the day.

Lovely as a perfume

On its own, or with Clary Calm or Jasmine.

How to use Neroli Touch

1.Every day: roll it onto your wrists and breathe it in calmly for a few minutes, morning and evening, like the women in the study.
2.Situation: on a day when your body feels different from usual, as a set moment for yourself.
3.As a perfume: together with Clary Calm on your wrists and neck.
4.Skin: roll a little onto your face, neck or d茅colletage after cleansing.
馃實 Where it comes from

The blossom for Neroli Touch comes from Egypt, where bitter orange has been grown for centuries. The blossoms are picked by hand and steam-distilled while they're still fresh.

My duo: Neroli and Clary Calm

Clary Calm is a roller with clary sage, lavender and chamomile among others, blended especially for women. I roll the two on one after the other, on my wrists and neck.

The fresh blossom of neroli and the soft, herbal scent of Clary Calm make a perfume I'd happily have around me all day.

Lavender 馃實 Bulgaria doTERRA鈥檚 Lavender grows on the high plains of Bulgaria, on fields run by family farms that have passed the craft down for generations. The flowering tops are harvested in summer and distilled close to the field; through Co-Impact Sourcing the growers get guaranteed purchase and fair prices. View Lavender → Turmeric 馃實 Nepal The rhizomes are harvested by hand by farming families in the hills of Nepal and distilled locally. Co-Impact Sourcing provides steady jobs and fair prices in a region where paid work is scarce. View Turmeric → Frankincense 馃實 Somalia 路 Oman 路 Ethiopia doTERRA's frankincense is a blend of several Boswellia species from Somalia, Oman and Ethiopia. Harvesters make careful cuts in the bark; the resin crystallises over a few days into beads, the tree's 'tears'. Every supply chain is audited against the FairWild standard. View Frankincense → Wild Orange 馃實 Brazil Sourced from hundreds of small farmers in southern Brazil, where the climate is ideal for citrus. The oil is cold-pressed from the peel; it takes around 154 oranges for one 15 ml bottle. View Wild Orange → Ylang Ylang 馃實 Madagascar 路 Nosy Be From growers on the island of Nosy Be, off Madagascar's north-west coast. The star-shaped flowers are hand-picked and distilled within 24 hours, so the rich, sweet aroma is preserved. View Ylang Ylang → Cedarwood 馃實 United States From the south-eastern USA, from Juniperus virginiana. A lovely detail: doTERRA distils the oil from sawdust and offcuts left over from timber processing, giving waste a second life. View Cedarwood → Magnolia Touch 馃實 Southern China The magnolia oil comes from southern China, from the white champaca. The delicate blossoms are hand-picked early morning or late evening and steam-distilled. View Magnolia Touch → Shinrin-Yoku 馃實 Japan (Hinoki) A blend with no single origin: oils from around the world come together. Its heart is Japanese, with the signature note Hinoki, the cypress of Japanese temples, inspired by shinrin-yoku, forest bathing. View Shinrin-Yoku → Peppermint 馃實 USA 路 India Sourced in the Pacific Northwest of the USA, from a family farm spanning generations, and in northern India (Uttar Pradesh). The steady, wet climate gives a high menthol content. View Peppermint → PastTense 馃實 Nepal A blend of several oils. Its most remarkable sourcing story sits in the wintergreen: wild-harvested in the mountains of rural Nepal, naturally rich in methyl salicylate. View PastTense → Deep Blue Stick 馃實 Nepal Built on the Deep Blue blend. Its main component, wintergreen, is wild-harvested in rural Nepal, where women climb the steep mountain slopes and communities manage their forest areas together. Fractionation leaves only the light, liquid part: colourless, odourless and miscible with any essential oil. View Fractionated Coconut Oil → Lemon 馃實 Italy (Sicily) 路 Brazil doTERRA's Lemon comes from two places with the same roots: the femminello lemon around Mount Etna in Sicily, and southern Brazil, where Italian emigrants brought their citrus craft with them in the seventies. The peels are cold-pressed; what's left over goes to bio-compost for electricity. Through Co-Impact Sourcing, growers and cooperatives work with guaranteed purchase and fair prices. View Lemon → Tea Tree 馃實 Kenya 路 Australia doTERRA's Tea Tree grows in two places: in Australia, where the Melaleuca comes from, and in Kenya, where smallholder farmers grow the shrub on land that once yielded little. The leaves are steam-distilled locally. Tea tree earns up to five times more there than maize, and for every kilo of oil a share goes into a development fund the cooperatives run themselves. View Tea Tree → Copaiba 馃實 Brazil (Amazon) Copaiba comes from the resin deep in the trunk of the copaifera tree, along the Amazon in the Brazilian state of Amazonas. Harvesters drill a small hole and tap the resin like maple syrup; one tree can live up to four hundred years. doTERRA helped the harvesters with protective gear, training and a cooperative of their own, so they earn more and stay in charge. View Copaiba → Oregano 馃實 Turkey doTERRA's Oregano is wild-harvested in Turkey, where the plant blooms in summer, by a network of hundreds of small farmers. The aerial parts are steam-distilled into one of the most concentrated oils there is. View Oregano → Lemongrass 馃實 India doTERRA's Lemongrass comes from India, from smallholder farmers often with no more than half a hectare of land. The grass is steam-distilled locally, and the spent grass then fuels the boiler; nothing is wasted. By placing distillation stills in the region, doTERRA gave the farmers a valuable crop to add. View Lemongrass → Cardamom 馃實 Guatemala 路 Honduras doTERRA's Cardamom comes from Guatemala and Honduras, where it grows in the shade of tall trees. The seed pods are picked, dried for around thirty-six hours and steam-distilled.
