The story of Magnolia

Our brains are wired for survival. All day long they scan for what's going wrong or could turn dangerous. The more stress you're under, the harder that system works, and the more you mainly see what's missing. And whatever you focus on, you create more of.

That's why I find magnolia such a lovely oil. Its sweet, soft scent helps me gently redirect that programming, towards what's lovely, what feels good, what's soft. It helps me look at my life with more gratitude.

Magnolia is one of the oldest flowering plants on earth. The tree was flowering before bees even existed, and was pollinated by beetles. In Chinese tradition, magnolia flowers have been used for centuries. This roller contains the oil of the white champaca, Michelia alba, from southern China. The trees are harvested twice a year; growers used to need scaffolding to reach the flowers, but these days they grow the trees lower and wider so picking is safer.

On your skin the oil feels soothing and nourishing, a lovely daily step in your skincare routine. Magnolia is naturally rich in linalool, the same gentle plant compound you'll find in lavender. That makes it lovely for a calming massage of your neck, shoulders or the soles of your feet at the end of the day.

1.Morning: roll it onto your wrists and name three things that are going well, however small. Your brain links the scent to that way of looking.

3.Evening: on the soles of your feet or the back of your neck, as a calm close to the day.

Lavender 馃實 Bulgaria doTERRA鈥檚 Lavender grows on the high plains of Bulgaria, on fields run by family farms that have passed the craft down for generations. Its most remarkable sourcing story sits in the wintergreen: wild-harvested in the mountains of rural Nepal, naturally rich in methyl salicylate. Its main component, wintergreen, is wild-harvested in rural Nepal, where women climb the steep mountain slopes and communities manage their forest areas together. Fractionation leaves only the light, liquid part: colourless, odourless and miscible with any essential oil. The leaves are steam-distilled locally. Tea tree earns up to five times more there than maize, and for every kilo of oil a share goes into a development fund the cooperatives run themselves. View Tea Tree → Copaiba 馃實 Brazil (Amazon) Copaiba comes from the resin deep in the trunk of the copaifera tree, along the Amazon in the Brazilian state of Amazonas. Harvesters drill a small hole and tap the resin like maple syrup; one tree can live up to four hundred years. doTERRA helped the harvesters with protective gear, training and a cooperative of their own, so they earn more and stay in charge. The aerial parts are steam-distilled into one of the most concentrated oils there is. View Oregano → Lemongrass 馃實 India doTERRA's Lemongrass comes from India, from smallholder farmers often with no more than half a hectare of land. The grass is steam-distilled locally, and the spent grass then fuels the boiler; nothing is wasted. By placing distillation stills in the region, doTERRA gave the farmers a valuable crop to add. The seed pods are picked, dried for around thirty-six hours and steam-distilled. In Honduras the Poverty Stoplight project helps families work their own way out of poverty; one of the farmers built a house with running water from it. The leaves are steam-distilled, giving the fresh, invigorating oil known for its high 1,8-cineole content. The blossoms are hand-picked in the middle of the night, before the sun can touch their scent. 5 ml takes around 21,000 blossoms.
