The story of Blue Lotus

For me, Blue Lotus is the scent of the evening. It calms me, I dream more vividly, and it has something magical about it that I find hard to put into words. That's why this bottle always sits on my bedside table.

The blue lotus is actually a water lily, Nymphaea caerulea. It opens as the sun rises and closes again when darkness falls. To the ancient Egyptians, that was a daily miracle. The flower was sacred to Nefertem, son of the creator god Ptah, who was also called ‘water lily of the sun’. Because the plant kept sprouting again after long droughts, it stood for life that always returns. In Tutankhamun's tomb, a relief shows the pharaoh holding a large water lily.

The blue lotus has its own place in China too. There it was a religious symbol and an emblem of femininity. In Buddhism it stands for wisdom and enlightenment, because the flower blooms clean and bright above muddy water. It's an image I like to take with me at the end of a busy day.

Real blue lotus is rare. The flowers are too delicate to distil, so the scent is carefully extracted as an absolute. In 2023, doTERRA's scientists bought eleven products sold online as ‘blue lotus’ and compared them with the real flower. None of the eleven smelled like the original: they contained synthetic fragrances and added oils such as lavender and citrus. The compounds behind all the stories about ‘mind-expanding’ lotus were virtually absent from the genuine extracts. What you smell is simply a beautiful flower.

How to use Blue Lotus Touch

1.Evening: roll it onto your wrists and neck as you go to bed, and take three slow breaths before you switch off the light. Lovely together with the breathing music.
2.Switching off: at the end of a busy working day, between work and home. Roll, cup your hands round your nose, pause for a moment.
3.Intention: letting go of whatever didn't get finished today. The lotus closes in the evening too, and simply opens again the next morning.
4.As a perfume: on your wrists and neck, close to your skin.
🌍 Where it comes from

doTERRA sources its blue lotus from two places in China. Near Guangzhou, the ponds were built especially for this oil; on Hainan island, doTERRA helped expand an existing nursery. Farmers stand waist-deep in the water and pick the flowers by hand into floating baskets, up to 100 kilos a day. Within 24 hours the flowers travel chilled to extraction. No pesticides are used in the ponds; fish keep the water clean. It has created 92 jobs, and for some families that means no longer having to move to the big city to earn a living.
