Supplement jungle – from FOMO to JOMO (joy of missing out)
Holiday in France. Sun, relaxation, joie de vivre. The perfect picture, right?
Until day 3. By then we had collectively turned into the cast of a reality TV show – but without the humor. The adults were snapping at each other. The kids were walking mood swings. And me? I was the Queen of Grumpiness. Day 4 brought the insight: our supplements were in the Netherlands. On the kitchen counter. Well, f*ck. π£
Pills are for sick people – and other nonsense I used to believe
I was that person. I know the type: “Taking supplements is for losers. I just eat healthy!”
Nice story. But it’s not true (anymore). Sorry. Here are the facts:
- Vegetables contain fewer nutrients than they did in 1950
- 9 out of 10 people get too little vitamin D, even in summer
- Magnesium deficiency in 60% of the population due to stress and caffeine
But you probably eat those 800 grams of vegetables per day that you need for the same nutrition as grandma’s one carrot. Right? I’m not judging – I also had to learn some expensive lessons first. After I started looking into these studies I went wild on supplements. I had a whole drawer full of this and that. Every new biohacking blog sent me on a research spree – and often ended in an online shopping binge. I seriously had more supplements than herbs in my kitchen cupboard! But just taking a bit of everything isn’t very smart!
Synthetic junk sabotages your body
Here comes the eye-opener: those synthetic supplements from the pharmacy? Your own compilation of bio-hacks? These sabotage your system.
What REALLY happens:
You swallow your synthetic vitamins and supplements. Your body thinks: “What is this plastic stuff?”
Your liver has to work overtime to decode that fake nutrient. Your adrenals pump out extra cortisol because they think there’s a crisis. They have to compensate for the stress that arises because your body doesn’t know what to do with that synthetic rubbish.
Meanwhile all those loose vitamins compete for absorption. Zinc blocks copper. Iron sabotages vitamin E. Calcium kicks out magnesium. And so on! It’s war in your gut.
